In a real world situation, sure! But the whole point was to install a fear of something unknown in human kind, and the alien they created fitted all the fears of the human mind. Plus it worked with the setting of the Watchman universe; nigh on the same as ours, but just a little bit more out there.

Plus the Watchmen film set up the character of Rorscach up as the hero, while the comic made it a big thing to point out how he was a homophobic, nazi sympathising woman hater. Which was kind of the big thing which made Watchmen not only and incredibly different comic, but also changed comic book characters forever.

Edit: Not that that was a selling point… Because it was interesting…
